Otaoruju says a strange voice urged him to kill his child
Otaoroju allegedly killed his son, Kazeem, using a local perfume on August 30, 2012 at Epe in Lagos.
He was arrested by officers attached to Epe Police Division, after the mother of the child, Ronke, reported the incident at the station.
However, the suspect claimed to have been pushed to commit the crime by a mysterious force.
The suspect and Ronke, a fashion designer, are not married, but Otaoroju said Ronke got pregnant for him after the two met and fell in love last year.
In spite of having a wife and three kids, Otaoroju said he had wanted to marry Ronke.
But that was before he "felt a strange voice" urge him to kill their child during a visit to Ronke's apartment on August 30.
"I sent Ronke to go and buy bread. She left the baby with me and went out. After Ronke left, I tried to resist but the force was too strong," he said.
"I went outside and bought a liquid substance known as Bint El Sudan; a kind of perfume which Hausa people use. I took the substance, opened Kazeem's mouth and poured it into his mouth. I don't know why I did that."
Strangely, the suspect claimed to love Kazeem and his mother, saying he came back to his senses after poisoning the boy.
"I do not have any quarrel with Ronke. It was after the murder that my eyes opened. It was the devil's handiwork and I regret my action," he repeated.
In her statement to the police, Ronke said by the time she got back to the house, her son was foaming in mouth and nose, and already gasping for breath.
The child was rushed to Epe General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Ronke subsequently reported the incident to the police after suspecting Otaoroju, who could not explain what had happened to the child.
The suspect was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, where he confessed to committing the crime.
